Agriculture faculty in Novi Sad was founded in 1954.

If necessary the Laboratory for Medical and Veterinary Entomology will be available for project needs. Key transfer of know-how experience in WP2 and WP4 and WP5 will be done by researchers and Professors from this partner organisation.

Research in the Laboratory for Medical and Veterinary Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Novi Sad, Vojvodina Province, Serbia has been concentrating on biology, ecology and systematic of insect vectors of human and animal diseases and aims to reduce environmental impact and improve the sustainability of vector control by comprehensive understanding of the their specific response to abiotic and biotic stimuli in the environment, host seeking behaviour, trapping/monitoring techniques (Petrić et al., 1999, Petric et al., 2000, Petrić et al., 2012a) and vector competence (Petric et al., 2012). Current research focuses on monitoring of invasive mosquito species (Petrić et al., 2012b, Petrić et al., 2012a) and mosquito born arboviruses in Serbia (Petric et al., 2012) as well as developing the behaviour based surveillance and control strategies towards mosquitoes and black flies (Petrić et al., 2009). Contribution to the knowledge and technologies in mosquitoes and black flies research and control are the following: a) the world’s third automatic interval sampling trap for mosquitoes (Petrić et al., 1989); b) the world’s first temperature regulated membrane feeding device (Cosgrove et al., 1994); c) the world’s first equation on temperature impact on mosquito host seeking behaviour (Petric et al., 1995); d) pioneering in standardization of mosquito surveillance techniques in Europe (Petrić et al., 1999, Petric et al., 2000); e) the first record of invasive mosquito species Aedes albopictus in Yugoslavia, third in Europe (Petrić et al., 2001); f) the first comprehensive book about mosquitoes of Europe (Becker et al., 2003) and mosquitoes of the World (Becker et al., 2010) (biology, morphology, vector competence, identification, control); g) Europe’s second detection of “cell fusing agent” and Serbia’s first detection of West Nile virus in vector mosquito (Petric et al., 2012); h) the novel edge treatment approach for biological control of black fly larvae in large (e.g. the Danube size) rivers (Petrić et al., 2009). Specific knowledge on phlebotomine vectors has been accumulating from 2011, during the search for the vector of filarial nematode, Onchocherca lupi, within an international research team in four expeditions to Greece and Portugal (Otranto et al., 2012).

Group for meteorology and climatology combine knowledge in modelling, monitoring and prediction of environment and climate change impact on plant and human health. The members of the group were involved in the following projects: (1) Reinforcement of the Research Potential in Centre for Meteorology and Environmental Predictions (RRP-MCM), RRP-MCM-043670-(FP6)-SSA; This project was oriented on promotion of collaboration with EU research institutions, creation of the opportunity for exchange, training and hiring new young researchers to reinforce the human potential. The upgrading and renewing of S&T equipment has open possibility to form regional network and integration in the ERA; (2) Adaptation of agriculture in European regions at environmental risk under climate change (ADAGIO) ADAGIO-044210-(FP6)-SSA; was based on climate change impact on agriculture in Europe and detection of main vulnerable regions, improvement of awareness and user-orientation of adaptation strategies and improvement of local representation; (3) Strengthening of research capacity for poplar and willow multipurpose plantation growing in Serbia (STREPOW) STREPOW-203734-(FP7)-REGPOT-2007-3 SSA; This project had objective of strengthening the capacities of researchers in poplar growing to successfully participate in research activities at EU level.
